It is true thar Apple macOS does not support S.M.A.R.T monitoring for external USB drives witouhout a additional driver but it fully support SMART monitoring for internal drives and devices connected to Thunderbolt 3. The protocol used by macOS is named S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). Its primary function is to detect and report various indicators of drive reliability with the intent of anticipating imminent hardware failures. MacOS provides a very common, standard and basic system to monitor the health of drives (Hard drives, SSD.). Guess what ? It's not an Apple limitation, both OWC and Plugable drives worked as expected. So I made some tests with 2 other "external thunderbolt 3 SSD" products from other manufacturers (OWC and ) to be sure that the limitation is really an Apple one (I had a doubt about this statement). The first answer of Samsung support was : it's not a Samsung limitation but an Apple limitation.
There is an important product limitation of the X5 SSD when connected to a macOS computer (may be Windows too, I can't tell you).
I'm not looking for any solution here (as Samsung support told me there was no solution) but I would like to share my disapointment about some specific points of the X5 SSD.
